How to Protect your First Line of Defense … Natural Immunity and Right Dietary Supplements

Given total nutrients and a strong immune system, your body has amazing healing properties of its own. You have an inborn potential for abundance and regeneration.

First, stop hurting your cells with harmful or empty nutrients.

There are three reasons your cells break down:

… poor biological fuel (lack of full spectrum nutrients)

… too many free radicals and lack of anti-oxidants to neutralize them

… personal immune system is compromised, less competent

What is a free radical?

You may have heard of a free radical, a common buzzword. Draw a large letter O for oxygen and inside it write a minus sign with the letter e. This quickly shows an unstable oxygen molecule minus an electron which attacks other stable molecules to gain an electron thus creating a chain reaction of free radicals. An overload of these molecules is implicated in the aging and disease process when anti-oxidants are deficient. Several lifestyle stresses and environmental factors are known to produce radical formation and oxidative stress

What is an anti-oxidant?

Anti-oxidants can neutralize free radicals by giving them extra electrons. Therefore, they can protect your atoms, cell tissues and genetic codes from inflammation and damage. Hopefully, you have a better picture what is meant by the statement that “anti-oxidants are potent free radical scavengers.”

Visualize a typical anti-oxidant molecule. Write these letters and circle them to make molecules. Link together with short lines

C C C (representing 3 carbon molecules)

H H (for 2 hydrogen molecules)

O O O (for 3 oxygen molecules)

OH … OH … OH …OH

What is oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress happens when there are too many free radicals outnumbering the protective anti-oxidants. If you wish, draw your symbol of too many free radicals overwhelming a couple of anti-oxidant molecules.

Free radicals can win the “war” in attacking cell structures without proper nutrient support or defenses from your food. Proper nutrition becomes the basis by which to fortify the cells to function and heal properly by ingesting a full spectrum of nutrient-dense foods with a sufficient intake of anti-oxidants to strengthen their ability to cope with free radical damage.

Best source of anti-oxidants are fruits, vegetables and whole food supplements.

It’s interesting to note that you have not changed biologically in the past twenty thousand or so years, but the changes in your environment are dramatic.

Your early biology was based on diets of early farmers, hunters and gathers of all natural foods, whole grains, and seeds, low in fat and rich in vegetables and fruits. You are now “hunters” in the supermarkets, loading your buggies with bottles, boxes, cans full of refined, reconstituted, and fortified “non-nutrients”.

In fact, the less bar codes on food you “hunt” for in a store, the better is your source for natural biochemical nutrition.

A closer look at the Natural Immune System

We agree that our cells have to deal with an increasingly toxic world. There are harmful chemicals in the soil, water and air as well as preservatives and chemicals in processed food. In the last 50 years, more than 75000 chemicals have been introduced into our environment.

The immune system is programmed to protect your cells. This complex immunity system of organs has highly specialized cells and an entire circulatory lymphatic system which carries lymph fluid throughout the length of your body to protect it from infection and other irregularities. In fact, 60 to 80% of the lymphatic system is located in your small intestine in order to signal and respond to substances or organisms that could threaten your health. It can be said that both life and death begin in the colon and its assimilation of proper or improper nutrients. See diagram of total immune system.

The chemical interactions are too complex to discuss here but let’s make a couple basic symbols. Draw an irregular circle with a few spikes sticking out of it. This is a B-cell that produces anti-bodies that attach to foreign matter and tag it for destruction. Draw a blob-like shape beside it. This is a T-cell (like the T-rex) that scavenges for and destroys infected or foreign matter. Feed it with another B-cell.

More scientists note that the state of the immune system in the development of diseases is more important than exposure to toxins, viruses or bacteria. “Bad” cells can only take root when some factor, genetic or environment, has suppressed the function of the immune system to no longer police the cells to remove the invaders.

There is a shift in the medical paradigm to a “multi-targeted” therapy aimed at stimulating the body’s own immune system rather than “mono-therapy” using one substance to treat a single symptom.

The bottom line is that it’s no longer reasonable to assume that a single substance, pill or drug can aid all the body’s interdependent systems.

Certainly, any cellular degenerative disease does not result from lack of drugs or to be viewed as pharmacological problems best dealt with by synthetic chemistry or drugs. It’s important to look at your innate biology, and choose the biological fuel or food to help restructure healthy cells. Question any matter that is an inorganic version of nutrients.

For example, some of the most feared cellular diseases are cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes 2 and dementia. Yet it is estimated that more than 2/3 of cancer may be prevented through lifestyle modification and diet. Fruit and vegetable consumption has consistently shown to reduce the risk of cancer. It is estimated that 80% of heart disease is reversible

Lastly, it’s important to be specific in checking out the clinical effectiveness of dietary supplements that help support your immune system. Read published studies, peer reviews, and third party testimonials. Bio-science, as well as simple logic, shows that taking isolated vitamins for specific problems is not natural and doesn’t work. In fact, the body can treat isolated and synthetic nutrients like foreign substances that can actually create deficiencies in other nutrients.

Choose dietary supplements wisely

A supplement is an act of faith, regeneration of cells takes months.

The purpose of a supplement is to overcome a deficiency in individual biochemistry for a long term balance.

One of the most important health decisions is the best dietary supplement for you and your family. Medical literature is full of controlled, double-blind clinical studies that show degenerative disease can be prevented or greatly reduced by improving diet through the addition of a dietary supplement. But you want to make sure you are taking proper health control without wasting your time and hard-earned money.

It is never about special interest groups, marketing, discount retail stores, low cost, financial gain or uninformed guesses. It is not about replacing poor dietary habits.

Be emphatic about your criteria that an essential supplement must contain a holistic balanced spectrum of nutrients for cellular metabolism including antioxidants, all vitamins, all minerals, amino acids, enzymes and co-factors to deliver these nutrients. It needs to provide a total spectrum of 100 nutrients daily.

They need to be bio-available at a molecular level in order to be absorbed and utilized with bonus inclusion of essential minerals. Note many high-potency multivitamins with rich vitamin concentrations lack important minerals. Be aware of other important manufacturing criteria (read labels)

Must AVOID additives or synthetic nutrients … consider natural and whole food-based

Ensure top-quality raw materials (VCP) — Vendor Certification Program

Comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to maintain highest health standards — GMP certification

Ensure finished products meet and exceed quality standards … adherence to United States Pharmacopoeia (USP30) specifications

General advice is to choose a “pill from a mill” format only after investigating the intensive process of converting raw materials into bottled pills on a shelf …the manufacturing practices, bio-availability and composition

There are thousands of vitamin pill suppliers but almost all of them buy their bulk powders from the same source (only a handful of manufacturers have the laboratory ability for extraction)

Find out which extraction method pulled the nutrients out of plant sources: synthetic (non-plant sources), fermentation, solvent or gas (plant sources)

What is the pill’s composition including inactive binders, fillers, preservatives and coatings?

Be careful about taking massive doses of vitamins and minerals, especially the popular and cheap synthetic “vitamins” widely sold in discount retail stores. The human body also is not designed to consume excessive doses of vitamins and minerals, especially artificial ingredients. For example, to consume an equivalent amount of 10,000 mg of Vitamin C in one day, you would need to eat 150 oranges … and Nature prevents you from doing that.

Be specific in checking out the proven clinical effectiveness of your supplement in research studies. Make sure the studies are industry wide, not in-house specific endorsed by doctors on board. Access the National Library of Medicine database and search for specific ingredients and their clinical efficacy.

Currently, a variety of high density whole food liquid nutrition or super food concentrates made from vegetables or fruits are a growing marketplace trend because bio-sciences show how whole food extracts provide a range of anti-oxidants, natural vitamins and minerals, amino acids, enzymes and co-factors. Of course it’s always better to make your own juices.

As a final consideration, measure the cost of supplements as a long term investment in health. It is only a fraction of long term costs if you should get a chronic disease. The lowest price should never determine what you buy. Several studies have shown that proper supplementation can dramatically reduce the burden of disease and the cost to manage it.

As a final statement, the dietary supplementation business has never been bigger — 75 billion dollars; but on the other hand, 500 billion dollars is spent on prescription drugs which treat symptoms but don’t address the actual causes of disease. The good news is that consumers can play an active role in preventing poor health conditions by working more closely with Nature’s brands of whole food phytonutrients. Comments are always welcome about good nutrition planning and results.

This herb has been hailed since ancient times for its medicinal properties. It has been traditionally used to help alleviate muscle pain, improve memory, boost the immune and circulatory system, and promote hair growth. It is a rich source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which are thought to help boost the immune system and improve blood circulation. It is a good source of iron, calcium and vitamin B6 and used as an extract, tea or culinary spice. Roast lamb wouldn’t be the same without it.
