How Writing this Challenge Story Stretched my Mind…What Do You Think?

Recently I submitted a short story for a Vocal Writing challenge called How One Incident Changed His Life but One Doesn’t Count … A Barn Owl Epiphany

A brief statement set the right tone, “…but first let me ask not to call it an IT. HE is a male barn owl judging by his white feathers.”

I welcomed the challenge of creative writing especially if ecological principles can make their way into the climax of the story. But in the process of writing as many writers understand, the story format is only the bare bones structure that holds the themes and morals that pervade the mainstream of life where sometimes are found rare nuggets of wisdom that can only be unearthed by such a plot and characters including a masterful barn owl who ascended any culture … negative, positive or exploitative.

It’s not about one culture that permeates stories that owls are unclean, a source of superstition with their eerie screams, flying predators of bad luck to be feared and avoided.
